Zero-Click Search: What Happens When Users Never Visit Your Website?

Zero-click search is when a search ends without a click on any result, because the answer, map or AI summary is already on the page. In the first four months of 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended that way. For businesses, the question is no longer only how to rank, but how to win when nobody visits.

This guide explains what zero-click search is, how much of it there is in 2026, what the evidence says about AI Overviews and clicks, where users go instead, how to measure visibility without visits, what regulators are doing, and how businesses — including in the UAE and in real estate — can adapt.

Key takeaways

  • Most Google searches now end without a click. SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb data found 68.01% of US Google searches were zero-click in January–April 2026, with only 232 of every 1,000 searches sending a click to the open web.
  • AI summaries cut clicks where they appear. Pew found users clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary against 15% without, and Ahrefs measured about 58% lower click-through for the top result.
  • The decline isn't a straight line. Seer Interactive saw organic click-through on AI Overview searches rebound from 1.3% to 2.4% between December 2025 and February 2026.
  • Assistants add a second no-visit channel. Similarweb says fewer than 7% of ChatGPT prompts included any source citation as of May 2026.
  • Measurement has caught up. Search Console, GA4's AI Assistant channel, ChatGPT's UTM tag and Bing's citation reports now show what used to be invisible.
  • Regulators are moving. The UK now requires Google to let publishers opt out of AI features and to attribute content with clear links.

A zero-click search is one that ends without a click on any result. SparkToro, whose studies popularised the measure, counts the searcher as leaving without clicking whether they were satisfied, frustrated or simply searched again. The answer might be a direct answer, a map, a knowledge panel, an AI summary — or nothing useful at all.

Definition

Zero-click discovery — the wider shift in which people find, compare and even buy through search results pages, AI summaries, assistants and in-app experiences without visiting the websites whose information powers the answer.

Zero-click isn't new; answer boxes and maps have kept people on Google for years. What changed is scale and form. AI Overviews and AI Mode now write full answers, AI assistants answer without results pages at all, and platforms increasingly let people act — book, shop or browse listings — inside the answer.

How much search is zero-click in 2026?

More than two-thirds of US Google searches, on the best available panel data.

What the data shows

Zero-click search in numbers

  • US Google searches (January–April 2026): 68.01% ended without a click. Of the clicks that did happen, 66.61% went to organic results, 27.38% to Google-owned properties such as YouTube, Maps and AI Mode, and 6.01% to ads.
  • The open web's share: 232 clicks per 1,000 US searches, on Similarweb's panel data.
  • 2024 baseline: 58.5% of US searches were zero-click, with 360 open-web clicks per 1,000 — but from a different data panel, so the two years aren't directly comparable.
  • AI Mode: only 0.34% of searches moved into AI Mode in January–April 2026, even though Google says AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users.
  • ChatGPT: fewer than 7% of ChatGPT prompts included any source citation as of May 2026 (Similarweb).

Treat the exact figures with care. The 2024 and 2026 studies use different clickstream panels, and neither includes searches made in the Google app. What they agree on is the direction: a large and growing share of searches never leaves Google.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

On the searches where they appear, most independent studies say yes; how much depends on the method.

StudyMethodFinding
Pew Research Center (March 2025)Tracked browsing of 900 US adultsUsers clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without; they clicked a link inside the summary on 1%; sessions ended on 26% of pages with a summary against 16% without
Ahrefs (December 2025)300,000 keywords, aggregated Search Console dataTop-result click-through about 58% lower when an AI Overview appears
Seer Interactive (2026 update)Client data across 53 brandsOrganic click-through on AI Overview searches fell to 1.3% in December 2025, then rebounded to 2.4% by February 2026
Amsive (2025)700,000 keywords across 10 websites in five industriesAverage click-through fell 15.49% on keywords with AI Overviews, but rose 18.68% on branded keywords that triggered one

Google disputes the traffic-loss story. Its head of Search wrote in August 2025 that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites had been relatively stable year over year, and that it was sending slightly more "quality clicks" — clicks where people don't quickly return. Google hasn't published the data behind that claim.

Common misconception

"AI Overviews are killing all search traffic." The effect is concentrated. AI Overviews appear mostly on informational queries, branded searches held up in Amsive's data, and Seer's 2026 numbers show a partial rebound. The sites hit hardest are those whose value is answering general questions that an AI summary can now answer.

Where do users go instead of your website?

Increasingly, they act inside the platform that answered them.

  • Apps inside AI assistants. OpenAI launched apps in ChatGPT in October 2025 with pilot partners including Booking.com, Expedia and Zillow, so users can browse and plan without leaving the chat. Bayut became the first UAE-based property platform with a ChatGPT app in June 2026.
  • Shopping in the chat. OpenAI's Instant Checkout, launched in September 2025, let US users buy from Etsy sellers directly in ChatGPT.
  • Advertising in the answer. OpenAI said in August 2026 that ChatGPT ads had reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate, with self-serve buying open to advertisers in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
  • Agents that watch for you. Google announced search agents at I/O 2026 that monitor for changes and notify users — using apartment hunting as its example.

The flow of value runs one way for now. Cloudflare's network data for July 2025 showed OpenAI's crawlers visiting about 1,091 pages for every visit they referred back, and Anthropic's about 38,065 — against about 41 for Microsoft.

How do you measure visibility without clicks?

With a different set of numbers. The tools to see zero-click visibility have arrived in 2026.

Measuring visibility when people don't click

  1. 01Impressions
    • Search Console Web data
    • AI appearance insights
    • Bing AI Performance

    Were you shown?

  2. 02Citations
    • Cited in AI answers
    • Citation share
    • Grounding queries

    Were you the source?

  3. 03Referrals
    • GA4 AI Assistant channel
    • utm_source=chatgpt.com
    • Portal app leads

    Did anyone come through?

  4. 04Brand demand
    • Branded searches
    • Direct traffic
    • Assisted conversions

    Did people remember you?

  5. 05Revenue
    • Leads and sales
    • CRM source fields
    • Cost per acquisition

    Did it pay?

Traffic is now one signal among five; the others show influence that never becomes a visit.

Search Console also gives a choice that didn't exist before: since August 2026, any site can opt out of appearing in Google's generative AI features. Google says the setting isn't used as a ranking signal elsewhere, but opted-out sites get no traffic or impressions from AI Overviews or AI Mode. Blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt is a different control that doesn't affect Search.

Does AI traffic convert better than search traffic?

Possibly, but the evidence is mixed and the volumes are small.

  • Higher: Microsoft Clarity found AI referrals to more than 1,200 publisher and news sites grew 155.6% in eight months, and converted to sign-ups at 1.66% against 0.15% from search — while still making up less than 1% of traffic. Similarweb estimated ChatGPT-referred shopping visits converted at 11.4% against 5.3% for organic search.
  • No difference: Amsive's study of 54 sites found AI assistant traffic converted at 4.87% against 4.60% for organic, a difference that wasn't statistically significant.
  • Small either way: Rightmove, the UK property portal, measured less than 0.5% of its traffic in the first half of 2026 coming from large language models, with more than 85% direct or organic.

Europe is moving fastest.

  • United Kingdom. In June 2026 the Competition and Markets Authority required Google to give publishers effective tools to stop their content powering AI features such as AI Overviews, to attribute publisher content with clear links in AI-generated results, and to let publishers opt out of fine-tuning.
  • European Union. In July 2026 the European Commission fined Google €890 million for breaching the Digital Markets Act, and said its dialogue with Google over how the decision applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode would continue.
  • United States. In Penske Media's lawsuit against Google over AI summaries, a hearing on Google's motion to dismiss was held on 25 August 2026, alongside a similar case brought by Chegg; no ruling had been entered by early September.

By competing for influence, not only visits.

  1. Earn citations. Seer found brands cited in an AI Overview got about 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited ones on the same results — though still 38% fewer than searches without an AI Overview. The tactics are covered in the GEO guide.
  2. Build demand for your name. Branded searches held up best in Amsive's data; people who already know you still click.
  3. Own the relationship. Move people from rented attention to channels you control — email, communities and, in the UAE, WhatsApp.
  4. Measure visibility, not just visits. Report impressions, citations and branded demand alongside traffic.
  5. Be where people convert. Portal apps in ChatGPT, marketplaces and ads inside assistants are now part of the funnel.
  6. Decide deliberately about opting out. Leaving Google's AI features removes you from answers as well as from training-style reuse.

The bigger picture of how AI engines choose sources is in how AI search works, and the differences between the disciplines in SEO vs AEO vs GEO.

What does zero-click search mean in the UAE and for real estate?

The same forces apply in Arabic and English. Google brought AI Overviews to the Middle East and North Africa, and in Arabic globally, in May 2025, and launched AI Mode in Arabic in October 2025. Search Console's AI opt-out and appearance insights cover all websites worldwide, including UAE sites, and OpenAI's self-serve ads are open to Middle East advertisers.

No UAE-specific zero-click data has been published. For property firms, the early signs are that portals remain strong while discovery moves upstream: Rightmove still gets most of its traffic directly, and Bayut now lets people search listings inside ChatGPT. The implications for developers and brokerages are covered in AI search for real estate.

What this means

In a zero-click world, the job of a website changes from being the first stop to being the source of truth. Answers get assembled elsewhere; your site is where the facts, the proof and the conversion still have to live.

Final takeaway

Zero-click search is now the default outcome of a Google search, and AI assistants have added a second channel where answers rarely send visits. The evidence says AI summaries cut clicks on the questions they answer, though not uniformly and not permanently in every case. Businesses that adapt measure influence as well as traffic, earn citations in the sources AI engines trust, build brands people search for by name, and meet customers where they now act — while regulators, led by the UK, start to set the terms of the exchange.
